A former police officer, now retired, has filed a lawsuit, according to a recent news report from Winnipeg Free Press, citing a toxic workplace environment. The article shares former constable, Belinda Duncan, has joined the WPS in 2000 and worked until she was “constructively dismissed” in April 2022 which led to an early retirement.

Duncan claims that her problems started after she unsuccessfully applied to transfer to the WPS relations diversity branch in December 2017, the section’s goal is to promote wholesome interactions with underrepresented communities and ethnocultural groupings. In response to the claim on toxic workplace environment by former Const. Duncan, the City of Winnipeg has not yet submitted a statement of defence. Although I may not have experienced the exact circumstances in the article, I’ve had my own encounters with toxic workplaces. It is disheartening to see how such dynamics can impact an individual’s professional life, especially someone who served the community for over two decades. This article stuck out to me in ways that reminded me, that even organizations upholding the law in my very own city can have toxic workplaces.
